How to Organize a Coat Closet for Maximum Space

Organized coat closet

Coat closets become cluttered quickly. Jackets, shoes, bags, and seasonal items pile up until the closet barely closes. Organizing a coat closet means deciding what actually belongs there and using the space efficiently.

Remove Non-Coat Items

Coat closets often hold random items that migrated there over time. Remove anything that isn't outerwear, shoes, bags, or seasonal accessories. Find proper homes for cleaning supplies, tools, and miscellaneous items.

Once you clear out the unrelated items, you'll likely find you have more space than you thought. This closet should serve one purpose: storing things people need when leaving or entering the house.

Store Only Current Season Coats

You don't need winter coats accessible in July or light rain jackets in January. Keep only the current season's outerwear in the coat closet. Store off-season coats in bedroom closets or under beds.

This rotation frees up significant space and makes it easier to find what you need. You're not digging through puffy winter coats to grab a spring jacket.

Use Vertical Space

Most coat closets waste vertical space. Add hooks at different heights for bags, scarves, and hats. Install a shelf above the hanging rod for bins or baskets holding gloves and winter accessories.

If the closet is deep enough, use an over-the-door organizer for smaller items like sunglasses, keys, or dog leashes. This keeps frequently grabbed items visible and accessible.

Organize Shoes Intentionally

Shoes pile up on coat closet floors. Limit this space to shoes worn regularly for going out—not every pair you own. A small shoe rack or tray keeps daily-use shoes contained.

If the closet floor is getting crowded, move less-worn shoes to bedroom closets. The coat closet should hold only what's actively being used for errands and outings.

Assign Hooks Per Person

If multiple people use the closet, assign each person a hook or section. This prevents everyone's coats from mixing together and makes it clear where things belong.

Kids' coats should hang on lower hooks they can reach themselves. This encourages them to put their own coats away rather than leaving them on furniture.

Add a Basket for Extras

Keep a small basket or bin on the floor or shelf for items that come and go: reusable shopping bags, umbrellas, or pet walking supplies. This prevents loose items from cluttering the space.

Empty this basket regularly. It's meant for temporary storage, not as a permanent home for miscellaneous items. If something sits there for weeks, find it a proper spot elsewhere.
